Unpacking the biggest night on campus
Cash Night, a.k.a Casino Night, is not just about winning big at the poker table, but it is about winning big in other aspects. Like what? Is what I asked Mr Harris. During my recent interview with Mr Harris regarding the ins and outs of cash night, I learned about what it takes to create an amazing night for the students.
Cash night has many different elements, from Upperclassmen asking underclassmen to be their dates, to the big balloon entrance, and the faculty led poker tables for the seniors and their dates. Mr Harris noted that all of these things take "a lot more than (himself)," usually needing the MPA, faculty, and the Student-Activities officers in an all hands on deck operation.
This tall task begins in around October as he "reach[es] out to vendors, and sees what changes need to be made from past years." Mr Harris still firmly believes in the upperclassmen asking the underclassmen as their dates. He is certain that Cash night is a special night where "all students interact." He also believes that part of what makes this night so special for all is the role of the upperclassmen and the way that they make sure "underclassmen are more integrated with the school and the big events on campus."
Arguably, Cash night is one of the biggest nights on campus, and being a new student can be hard. Having a hard time with feeling a part of a community is a learning curve that comes with being a younger student in a community that is so big. Mr Harris views this night as a way for the "upperclassmen to figuratively hold hands and make sure the underclassmen enjoy Casino night." If one went around to every single kid in the school and asked them what their favorite night of the year is, I would guess almost half would say cash night. Cash night is the perfect mix of stepping outside of one’s social comfort zone and participating in games everyone knows and loves, like Blackjack, Poker, and Roulette.
This being said, there is something for everyone to do on cash night and it is always a great schoolwide event. Cash night is my favorite night, as it is a night where no matter who you are, or what you do, it is all put aside for a night of enjoyment and community improvement. Cash night 2026 is going to be one to look forward to in the next few weeks and hopefully remember for a lifetime.
